“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” — Mahatma Gandhi
Set amidst the serene hills and lush greenery of Changsari in Assam’s Kamrup district, AIIMS Guwahati is a symbol of transformation in the healthcare landscape of Northeast India. Envisioned under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, its foundation was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 26, 2017. The institute began its academic journey on January 12, 2021, with 50 MBBS students at a temporary campus on Narakasur Hill-Top, Guwahati, before shifting to its sprawling 189-acre permanent campus in March 2022.
Officially inaugurated on April 14, 2023, AIIMS Guwahati blends modern infrastructure with eco-conscious design, including climate-responsive architecture and sustainable water and waste management systems. The tranquil surroundings — rolling hills, open skies, and the nearby Brahmaputra — create a peaceful environment for both learning and healing.
Currently operating with 150 hospital beds and over 25 specialty and super-specialty departments, the institute is rapidly expanding towards a 750-bed capacity. It houses advanced medical technologies, such as a 3T MRI scanner, a linear accelerator for cancer therapy, and a state-of-the-art cath lab. An AYUSH block supports integrative care, embracing traditional medicine alongside modern treatments.
Academically, the institute now admits 125 MBBS and 75 nursing students annually. In just one year of full operation, it has served over two lakh patients, reaffirming its role as a vital healthcare hub for Assam and the entire Northeast.
AIIMS Guwahati stands not only as a premier medical institute but also as a promise — of accessible, quality healthcare and world-class education rooted in the spirit of service and progress.
